Apple
and other sweet fruit
Girona apples
Fruit has been grown on the Baix Ter plain since time immemorial and is one of the main sources of income for farmers. The main fruit crop is the apple, but there are also peaches, nectarines, cherries and pears. The municipality of Ullà is where the landscape of apple trees reaches its maximum splendour.
These locally-grown products are becoming more and more valuable. In particular, the apples here have a distinctive origin and quality, the prestigious Girona Apple Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The most well-known varieties are Golden, Red Delicious, Royal Gala, Granny Smith and Pink Lady, but some local varieties are also still grown. Production is integrated, which means the use of agrochemicals is kept to a minimum and processes are applied to promote the diversity of the agricultural ecosystem.
Some producers and tourism companies offer guided tours of the apple orchards, with tastings included.
