Basic information of the Natural Park
This Natural Park, one of the few in Catalonia with parts both on land and sea, was declared by the Law 15/2010 and served to unify the regulations of three areas that were already under protection: the Montgrí massif, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter. The total area of the Natural Park is almost 8,200 hectares distributed between the area on dry land (6,155.20 ha) and the marine area (2,039.99 ha).
Within the Natural Park there are three specific areas that have a higher degree of protection: the marine environment within a radius of 200 metres that surrounds the Medes Islands (Partial Marine Natural Reserve, with a peripheral protection zone); the surface above the water of the islands and islets of the Medes (Full Natural Reserve), and the series of lagoons and wetlands of the Ter Vell, La Pletera, and the ponds of Fra Ramon and d’en Coll (Partial Natural Reserve).
The Park has 38 natural habitats, 17 of European Interest and four priority conservation areas. Also, within the municipalities that make up the Park, there are 32 heritage sites declared Cultural Assets of National Interest (BCIN in its Catalan initials).
