Bellcaire de l'Empordà
Bellcaire d'Empordà is part of the Baix Empordà region, province of Girona. The municipal term has an extension of 13 km² and 35 m. of altitude The limits of the municipal term are to the north with Albons, to the east with Torroella de Montgrí – L'Estartit, to the south with Ullà and to the west with La Tallada d'Empordà.
The town of Bellcaire, like most towns on the Empordà plain, is located at the top of a small hill from which you can see a large area of land that had been occupied, to the north, by the huge Bellcaire lagoon . This lagoon, like many others in the Empordà, was drained in the middle of the 18th century so that it could be used as farmland. At the highest point in the town, Bellcaire preserves the medieval Palace-Castle that the Counts of Empúries had built at the end of the 13th century, driven by strategic military defense needs to deal with the domains that the Catalan crown had in Torroella de Montgrí and Albons.
The Castle has been declared a HISTORICAL-NATIONAL MONUMENT by the Generalitat de Catalunya and every year serves as the setting for an epic theatrical performance in which the play "Bandera de Catalunya" is staged. The Romanesque church of Sant Joan de Bellcaire preserves evidence from various periods and styles: early Christian, pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic.
In the middle of Bellcaire we find the Rec del Molí, which is currently used for irrigation, but in the past was used to provide hydraulic energy to the mills in the area, and in particular to the one in Bellcaire.
