Sustainable and artisanal fishing
Fishing is an activity with a long tradition in the Empordà and the Costa Brava. In the maritime sector of the Natural Park there are more than 60 species of fish and shellfish fit for human consumption; some of the most outstanding are anchovies, lobsters, sea bass, sea bream, squid and sardines, among many others.
Fishermen in this area are mostly grouped in two guilds, one in L'Escala and the other in L'Estartit. Most fishermen use the traditional style and sell their catch in the main towns of the Natural Park and the markets of other towns on the Costa Brava. The Fishermen's Guild of L'Escala has created the Fish Interpretation Centre – MARAM. This entity is redefining fishing tourism, an activity that involves boarding a traditional fishing boat and accompanying fishermen on a morning's excursion.
