RICE FROM PALS
Local product
The most prominent crop in the natural park
Rice is the most important crop in the Natural Park, both for its extent and for the culinary prestige it has achieved. In addition, the rice paddies play an important role for the fauna as the flooded fields (from November to February) make it an ideal habitat for birds, insects and the unique flora.
In Pals, the cultivation of rice began in the 15th century, in a mill that dates back to 1452 and is still preserved today and owned by one of the families that sell this product. Pals rice has a notable texture and outstanding quality, part of which is due to the local climate. Not being so warm as other rice-growing regions areas, the rice must be in contact with the soil longer, which makes it more consistent.
Under the brand Arròs de Pals (Pals rice) there are indigenous varieties such as bahia or bomba and new varieties such as carnaroli or nembo. This product occupies a prominent place in local homes and most restaurants, with arròs a la cassola being one of the most traditional classic dishes.
The “Ruta de l’Arròs” (Rice Route) begins in Pals, an activity on board a train that provides a window into the world of rice cultivation, from planting to the harvest. The route travels through the rice fields and stops at the Molí de Pals, where the history of the mill is told. Other rice farms also offer guided tours.
